BTB Signs Agreement With The University Of Belize To Update The National Sustainable Tourism Master Plan

BTB SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF BELIZE TO UPDATE THE NATIONAL SUSTAINABLE TOURISM MASTER PLAN

Belize City, Belize, February 9th, 2022 –  The Belize Tourism Board today signed an agreement with the University of Belize (UB) for a partnership that will see the national university updating the National Sustainable Tourism Master Plan of Belize. With COVID-19 having impacted the tourism sector globally, and creating significant market shocks, countries that seek to remain competitive in the travel industry must also evolve their plans to charter a renewed path to resurgence. As a result, this process will not only highlight the gaps that Belize currently has in its tourism development strategy, it will also seek to align Belize to new travel trends and market realities, in order to facilitate future tourism growth and prominence.

The University of Belize, through its in-house team of local technical experts, along with a small team from the University of Melbourne in Australia, will be spearheading this process. The Consultancy will be executed over a 10 month period, and will invest heavily on spatial planning and industry-wide consultations with public, private and civil sector partners. This partnership was commemorated today with a signing ceremony, at which the Hon. Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, encapsulated the importance of this partnership and process:

“… this process is to ensure that our national plan and strategy for tourism integrates key and critical development factors. This, will not only allow our industry to get back on track post-COVID, but also for our industry to take an evolutionary step forward as we drive for a new, resilient, innovative and sustainable growth in tourism for the foreseeable future.”

The agreement was signed by Mr. Evan Tillett, Director of Tourism, BTB, and Dr. Vincent Palacio, Interim President of the University of Belize.

Speakers during the signing ceremony included Hon. Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations, Mr. Evan Tillett, Director of Tourism, Dr. Vincent Palacio, Interim President of the University of Belize and Mr. Anthony Sylvestre Jr,  Chairman of the UB Board of Trustees.  Also present at the signing were Mrs. Nicole Solano, CEO in the Ministry of Tourism & Diaspora Relations, Mr. Abil Castaneda,  Director of Quality Management & Capacity Development, Major Lloyd Jones, Vice Chairman of the UB Board of Trustees as well as other UB representatives.
