BTB Honors PGIA Porter Steven Evans as its Frontline Hero

Belize City, Belize, February 3, 2023:  The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) is pleased to announce that its Frontline Hero Award for the month of January goes to Mr. Steven Richard Evans. Mr Evans is a well-known and prominent personality  at the Philip Goldson International Airport where he has worked as a porter for over 45 years.

Respectful, humble, kind, patient and service-oriented are some words that best describe Steven Richard Evans. Born in Belize City on January 15, 1956, Steven grew up in Ladyville. He learned the value of hard work and self-discipline at an early age as he assisted his father at the family farm from sunrise to sunset. In 1977, he decided to take a job as a porter at the old Stanley Field Airport, but little did he know that this job would become his life-long career.  Helping visitors with their luggage, securing their transportation, and ensuring they had a positive first impression of the jewel became Steven’s daily mission. When the international airport opened, there were initially only seven international daily flights. Fast forward to 2023, with the increase in tourism, the airport now handles over 17 daily flights thus creating a greater demand for porters. Steven has been at the center of all this growth, always serving travelers with exceptional service and dedication. At age 67, Steven is a Belizean dynamo showing no signs of retirement or slowing down.  His secret: a healthy life. He recollects that the only time when he had to slow down for a short time was during the pandemic in 2020; the PGIA closed and service was limited to private flights. But even then, Steven took his job even more serious to ensure his customers were always satisfied.

“I feel great to be recognized as a BTB Frontline Hero. This is really a blessing. If you respect everyone, always give your best and dedicate yourself to serving people with dedication and humility, then you will get the blessings from above,” Mr. Steven said.

The BTB proudly congratulates Mr. Steven Richard Evans for his long years of exceptional service to our country. As part of his award, Mr. Evans gets a cash award of $1,500, courtesy of the BTB and a two-night stay for two at Sunset Caribe in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

The BTB’s Frontline Hero Award program was established to recognize outstanding Belizeans who have served Belize beyond their call of duty. This program is operated in collaboration with tourism stakeholders who have been generous in contributing prizes to the honorees.  Stakeholders wishing to contribute a prize towards the Frontline Hero Awards Program can contact BTB’s Public Relations Unit via email at [email protected] or Tel: 227-2420.
