BTB joins San Pedro Town Council and Ministry of Works to enhance Secret Beach access road

Belize City, Monday, 25th June, 2018: In an effort to further develop and promote the sun and beach tourism product and increasing visitors’ experience, the Belize Tourism Board in collaboration with San Pedro Town Council and Ministry of Works, has implemented a project resulting in the resurfacing of 3.5 miles of road leading to Secret Beach in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

The completion of this project has cut the road time travel by half allowing more visitors accessibility with an enjoyable ride.  As part of the project, which included the installation of road signs, BTB provided the fill material, the San Pedro Town Council provided fuel and the Ministry of Works supplied the machinery and labor.

San Pedro is the most visited destination in Belize with 181,460 guests vacationing in 2017 alone. Secret Beach has quietly evolved into a preferred sun and beach hub approximately 1 hour from San Pedro town where locals and guests can access the area via golf carts, taxis and bicycles. The Secret Beach is not so secret anymore; receiving hundreds of people enjoying its crystal-clear waters daily. The demand increase is attributed to growth in room stock on the north of the island.

The road project falls within the scope of the Belize’s National Sustainable Tourism Master Plan, which calls for the implementation of product development programs to cover specific projects to improve accessibility.

The road venture provided a unique opportunity to improve the much-needed road access at a very low cost and at a time when Belize continues to attract numerous visitors as a unique, Curious Destination.

In addition to Taste of the Caribbean, there will be a Caribbean 305 event on June 23rd at Jungle Island also in Miami, where all the flavors of the Caribbean will be on full display. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the gastronomic delights of top chefs, bartenders and Hall of Fame mixologists from over 17 Caribbean countries and dance the night away with contagious Caribbean music.

Belize’s participation in Taste of the Caribbean is part of BTB’s and our tourism stakeholder’s joint and ongoing marketing efforts to promote Belize as a unique, Curious Destination.
